The Pearl District
One of the most unique areas in Portland is the Pearl District, just a short walk from downtown. This neighborhood has undergone an incredible evolution in recent years; from train yard and industrial neighborhood to partial artist colony to a center for high-end retail, art, restaurants and urban living.
Locally referred to as "The Pearl," the neighborhood gained its name from a gallery owner who suggested that the fine art galleries housed within less-than-appealing warehouse exteriors were akin to pearls hiding inside of rough shells. The City of Portland has invested heavily in the transformation of the neighborhood, and today the Pearl District is one of the most vibrant areas in the community. While rising rents many have driven out many of the loft-dwelling artists, the neighborhood remains a hotbed of art galleries, trendy restaurants, lofts and unique shopping opportunities.
