Skiing & Snowsports
Skiers and snowboarders alike can appreciate the winter sports opportunities available within a short distance of the metro area. Snow sports enthusiasts of all kinds are fortunate to have many great locations to choose from. Two of the most popular spots nearby are on Mt Hood, just outside the city of Hood River: Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Resort and Timberline Lodge and Ski Area.
Mt Hood Meadows Ski Resort is a 2,150-acre ski area with surprisingly varied terrain. Only 67 miles from Portland, the resort offers rentals, repair, day care services, a variety of lessons, and twelve eating establishments. The resort also has a large area called the “Comfort Zone”, designed for those who wish to ski at slower speeds without feeling pressured by fast skiers.
Timberline Lodge and Ski Area is located on Mt. Hood’s south side, and the lodge is a National Historic Landmark. The lodge, at an elevation of 6,000 feet, was built in 1936 as part of the Works Projects Administration. Today it boasts 70 guest rooms, spa and seasonal pool, sauna, 3 restaurants, and banquet facilities. Timberline also has two mascots: St. Bernards Heidi and Bruno.
